What are Personal Property Trusts?
What are Personal Property Trusts? We're living in a world of great change, and a lot of that change is being driven by technology. Many people today feel that they have to give up on some of their rights to privacy, as the widespread availability and use of the Internet kind of does away with those rights anyway. However, there is no reason for people not to keep some of their most important transactions private. The lack of privacy we see all around us today should be cause for concern for many citizens, for many different reasons. Any stranger can have access to your phone number, your car insurance, and other details of your personal life within a matter of hours. They may even be able to access information about what kind of property you hold title to. That's right, the majority of real estate ownership information is right on the Internet for everyone to see, as a matter of public record. This is not a legal requirement, or even geared towards any specific purpose at all, it is just something that happened as the Information Age outpaced the thought processes of many people. All of a sudden, all personal information was widely available, and most people thought this was just how it was supposed to be. Well, that is not the case, and it certainly isn't true when it comes to the property you own. Property ownership is not required to be a matter of public record. Landlords and those engaged in real estate transactions are just two examples of people who may not want the viewing public to have immediate access to their transactions. How, then, can an individual ensure that their property ownership stays off the record, and is not there for anyone anywhere to see? Well, the best way is through a personal property trust. With a personal property trust, the owner of the property in question allows the title to the property to be held by a specified trustee, under specific arrangements of a land trust agreement. The use of the property, the assets of the property, and so on are still retained by the owner, the trust company is only listed on the title. As such, the owner of the property retains his or her anonymity. There are other benefits to personal property trusts, which we will explore in further articles.
